A Brief History of Syrian Cuisine: Falafel

Continuing our exploration of the delicious and diverse would of Syrian cuisine, we’re turning our spotlight to a beloved classic: Falafel.

Read on as we dive into the rich history of this iconic dish, uncovering its origins, the culinary journey that brought it to our plates - all why Falafel holds a special place in our hearts and on our menus here at Tayybeh.

What is Falafel, and what is it made of?

Falafel is a deep-fried ball or patty that is made of ground chickpeas or fava beans.

At Tayybeh, our gluten-free Falafel is made with chickpeas and a special house-made herb mix, making it packed with flavour without any unnecessary fillers.

What makes Syrian Falafel truly authentic is the balance of the vibrant herbs and spices and the earthy richness of the chickpeas. Once the ingredients are combined, the mixture is shaped and deep-fried until golden brown, making it crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.

How to Pronounce Falafel

Fah-lah-fel

Where Did Falafel Originate?

Falafel comes from the Levant(ine) region of the Middle East, which today is comprised of Syria, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon and Israel. For our Tayybeh team, who have migrated from Syria to Canada, Falafel is an integral part of our culinary heritage and upbringing.

While its exact city and country of origin may be a mystery and subject of common food debate, Falafel continues to be a beloved staple in many areas of the Middle East and we’re so privileged to share it with our restaurant guests and catering clients here in Kitsilano, Vancouver.

Why We Love Falafel

Our team enjoys frying and serving Falafel each and every day because it is not only so delicious but also versatile and vegan-friendly. It also has this natural ability to bring people together over food.

Falafel is a comforting reminder of home for many of our staff and guests, offering a taste of Syria in every bite. It’s also an easy way to share our heritage and introduce people to the flavours we love.

How Can I Try Falafel?

When you dine in at Tayybeh, you can enjoy our 5-piece Falafel on its own or as a meal with zesty cabbage salad, white Basmati rice and hummus for dipping.

12-piece Frozen Falafel packages are also available on these apps, and online.
