Five Ways to Cook with Mhammara

Middle Eastern food and Syrian cuisine is known for its unique taste, texture and blends of delicious spices. What many people don’t realize, though, is its versatility. Lots of Syrian and Middle Eastern food is naturally gluten-free and vegan, making it suitable for many different dietary preferences. 

One of our customer favourites is Mhammara, a sweet red pepper spread that originates in Syria but is popular throughout the Levantine region. A mixture of red peppers, pomegranate molasses, crushed walnuts and olive oil, Mhammara is a much loved classic both in the Middle East and now here in Vancouver! 

Not only is it absolutely delicious, Mhammara is also a bit of a culinary chameleon. Add it to a sandwich, mix it into your favourite pasta dish, give an omelette some flavour or use it to flavour up your potatoes. Here are some of our favourite ways to enjoy it. 

On your Sandwich 

If you’re looking to add a bit of flavour or moisture to your lunchtime sandwich or wrap, but want to avoid using anything too heavy or messy, Mhammara is the perfect choice for the job. Just spread it over your wrap or bread, add in your fillings and enjoy a flavoursome sandwich - with no awkward drips!

Chips and dips are one of the world’s most popular appetizers for a reason! Give yours a Middle Eastern twist with a bag of our homestyle baked pita chips and a few scoops of Mhammara for a tasty pre-dinner snack.  

On your Potatoes or in your Favourite Pasta Sauce 

Potatoes and pasta are one of the most versatile foods to cook with. We love frying potatoes up at home with a few dollops of Mhammara mixed throughout to give them a sweet, tangy kick. You can also bake sweet potatoes in the oven and serve them with Mhammara on top for a quick and easy dinner idea. 

It also works great for mixing with pasta or adding to your existing pasta sauce for a dose of extra flavour. 

Mix a Spoonful Through Eggs 

People often add salt, pepper, ketchup or even mustard to their morning eggs or lunchtime omelette - but try it with Mhammara and you’ll never go back! Mix a spoonful or two through scrambled eggs, or spread it over an omelette to give your tastebuds a whole new experience.
